Do I need vaccinations and/or visas?

If you are from UK, Australia, NZ, Eire, South Africa, USA or Canada, you don’t need a visa to come to Peru. Others please contact your travel agent, or the consulate of the country you are travelling to for the most up-to-date information regarding necessary visas for your tour. Vaccination requirements MUST BE CHECKED WITH a TRAVEL DOCTOR as only medical practitioners are able to advise on the area's current situation and most up-to-date requirements for immunization. If you are coming to the Amazon Jungle, its necessary a Yellow Fever Vaccination, don’t forget to bring your certification! It is your responsibility to make sure that you have the correct travel documents for your trip. If you are paying as a student, don’t forget your student card.

Do I need Travel Insurance?

Yes, ALL Vamos Expeditions TRAVELERS require travel insurance. You will need to provide your tour leader with details such as the insurance company, policy number and emergency contact number. Please make sure you know exactly what you are covered for, remembering there are many activities available.

What time should I arrive on the first day of the trip?

We highly recommend that our clients add a day or two to their joining and departing cities to take advantage of the sights and excursions available. Although your arrival and departure days are free time for you to acclimatise or sightsee, from experience we find that an extra day or two ensures that you don’t have to rush. In the evening of day 1 you will come together with your tour leader and other group members for your first orientation meeting. In the case you booked an independent journey without a tour leader you will meet our Vamos Expeditions representative upon arrival and will provide you with all the information for your trip.

Is there a lot of crime in the places we visit, is it very dangerous?

Definitely NOT. We tend to hear the very worst news from Latin America and nothing about the very friendly, helpful people and extraordinary culture. Most crime is opportunistic and not violent and of course, it is possible to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Care and common sense will nearly always prevail.

How do I get to the starting hotel from the airport?

We have recently included arrival airport transfers in our tour prices. Airports in Latin American capitals can be very chaotic and many people really appreciate this service after a long flight. The pre-departure information with which we will provide you will give you also the name and address of the hotel where your tour will begin, as well as some helpful hints about travel in that country.

When and Where will I meet my group leader and other members?

Your adventure officially begins on day 1 of your tour itinerary. Your group will meet in the joining point hotel generally in that day. There will be a note posted by your tour leader or Vamos Expeditions representative in the lobby of the hotel indicating what time and where the group will be meeting. If you can not find the note, the hotel reception is always very helpful in providing information to those who request it. The group will generally have an orientation meeting in the hotel before setting off on the tour.

Is it alright to go on this trip on my own?

We can understand your concerns about safety and travelling alone in a foreign country. That is, however, one of the main reasons why people take a Vamos Expeditions tour - to give you the freedom to travel on your own while enjoying the safety, security, and friendship of our guides. Many women, and men, choose our tours just to feel more at ease about their holiday. Your tour leader is experienced and is there to accompany you during travel from location to location, to take you to the most reputable lodgings, and to help you organize the most responsible local tour operators for your activities. In the case of an independent journey without tour leader, our office is constantly in touch with your hotels and our local guides who will pick you up from the local airports, buses, etc., they will orientate you in the new city where you arrive and will help you with anything you need.

What type of clothes should I take with me ?

One thing that you can be sure of in this business is the variety in weather that is generally experienced on an adventure tour. Considering fluctuations in altitude and climate changes during your trip, we always recommend one main strategy - LAYERS. The only way to be sure that you are prepared for all types of weather is to bring a basic assortment of layered clothing. T-shirt, long-sleeved shirt, fleece, raincoat, trousers that zip-off into shorts, etc. Our section Tips for Trips will provide you with some more suggestions on what kind of clothing you should bring for the particular destination that you have chosen.

How much luggage can I take with me?

We recommend one large duffel bag or backpack per person on all our tours and it’s preferable to use a big backpack. Also bring along a daypack to carry things you will need during the day. No more than 25 kilos of luggage is our recommendation to avoid extra luggage charges on local transports, but this rarely happens. A smaller duffel bag you can fold up in your bigger one can be very useful for your souvenirs and can be used to store luggage in some of the hotels while we go on shorter overnight excursions. More information about what to pack for the particular destination you have chosen, you can find in our section: Tips for Trips.

How much money should I bring with me?

Please refer to personal spending money on each of our trip dossiers, the amounts there are only suggestions, to cover your meals and optional activities. But if you are a great shopper, or you like to try the local cocktails and wines with your meals, then you should probably bring more.
