Machu Picchu will stay open for visitors

Machu Picchu will stay open for visitors in April 2016 despite maintenance on Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu Mountain

Vamos Expeditions clarifies that the ruins of Machu Picchu will remain open in April 2016 despite the reports of closure for maintenance purposes of the trails to the mountain peaks of Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu mountains.

The trails to climb Mountain Machu Picchu and Huayna Picchu will be closed during the month of April 2016, however, these trails are completely separate to Machu Picchu itself (and separate from the trail to the Sungate and the Inca Trail and the Lares, Vilcabamba and Salcantay trek), the normal tourist access for the archeological site of Machu Picchu will remain open during the whole year.

«There has been some misunderstanding that because of the maintenance works occurring on the trails to Machu Picchu Mountain and Huayna Picchu mountain the whole archeological site would be closed in April 2016.» says Annelies Hamerlinck, CEO of Vamos Expeditions.  «This is not the case and normal access to the Lost City of the Incas will remain open for our travelers.  In the past years, we actually have recommended visitors NOT to climb Huayna Picchu Mountain trail for safety reasons. Instead we recommended travelers to hike up to the Sungate or Mt. Machu Picchu from where they can enjoy incredible panoramic views over Machu Picchu and its surroundings.  We are really happy with the news that the government will do work to make these trails safer.»
